MAY 2008 by Carole Bannister
My request in last month’s edition for better weather was heeded and May has brought us much better bowling weather with the green quickening rather faster than expected.
The Ladies won their game against Seascale, but, in the next round at home, Kirkbride were just a little too much. Well done girls for getting through the first game and better luck next time.
The WCMTL is progressing well with wins so far this season and the support outstanding as usual. The first week in June will see the club tour to Troon and the first round of the WCMTL knock out cup takes place the following week.
Club competitions are progressing steadily; the Keith Buckley Triples was won by Edna Alexander, Pat Cowan and Raymond Williamson.
We have had friendly matches against Port Carlisle, Lazonby, Keswick Fitz Park and Wigton, with wins all the way – well bowled.
The club hosted the annual HVP game followed by Pie & Peas supper which was a resounding win for Croft and on Sunday 1st June the County under 25 rounds to semi final will be held at the club.
The county competitions are underway and June will see much more bowling and fuller diaries - Happy Bowling.

APRIL 2008 by Carole Bannister
Well the season opened to torrential rain and cold, but our intrepid members ventured out onto the green and fought valiantly for 6 ends in our opening day President versus Vice Presidents match – Vice Presidents team winning. They then swiftly returned to the club house for Pie & peas and many hot cups of tea. Following the meal President Tony Dixon informed all the members present of all events taking place and asked for support.
Since then we have had mixed weather and mixed bowling, but we can safely say the season has started. The green is looking outstanding and comments have been very favourable to the playing surface especially this early in the season.
The first triples competition of the year, the Bert Kitching Trophy, was won by Audrey Greenslade, Ted Ring, Elizabeth Ring on a count back, so competition is high.
The first WCMTL game against Maryport resulted in a 7-2 home win for Croft, a good start.
Other club competitions are now getting under way and the ladies travel to Seascale in their first round National Top Club game – good luck.
The diaries are filling and muscles are getting accustomed to the new exercise regime. So let’s all look forward to a wonderful 2008 season – AND BETTER WEATHER!

JUNE 2008 by Carole Bannister
We can safely say we had a blazing June until the third week when the heavens opened and did not know when to shut again! We suddenly went from greens that were so fast you daren’t let go of your wood to ones that nearly dislocated your shoulder – such is outdoor bowling.
The County under 25’s competition was held at the club at the beginning of June and once again a resounding success, thank you to all who helped.
The club tour to Troon was enjoyed by all who attended, with a little bowling and much of the amber nectar. Thanks to Keith for arranging this.
Three friendly games were played – Skelton at home and won, Wigton Ladies away and drew, Linton Ladies at home and won. Unfortunately a new fixture with West End was postponed due to the weather but has been rearranged for August.
The WCMTL is still progressing well although Croft lost in the Knock out cup at Frizington, not a happy hunting ground for us – better luck next year. So far we have won all the league games, well done to all who have played and thank you to all who have supported.
Club and county competitions are moving a long; remember to keep an eye on the play by dates. The Tom Starkie Triples was won by Francis Dixon, Sarah Bell and David Alexander. County competitions are heading towards their conclusions ready for the Ladies and Men’s National competitions in August. There are still a few chances to qualify this year so good luck to those who are still participating.
The Ladies county semi finals will be held at Edenside on Monday 7th June at 1.30pm and we have 2 representatives taking part. Liz Garritty will be playing the 4 wood singles against Maureen Eccles from Seascale, and Elizabeth Ring is playing Rhonda Clark from Wigton in the 2 wood singles. Good Luck to them both.
Elizabeth Ring and Phyllis Penrice are also through to the county final of the Bowls England Over 55 pairs to play against a pair from Skelton. The date is yet to be confirmed.
Let’s hope that July gives us the summer we would like and if it must rain, please do it at night.
SPECIAL AWARD
Geoff Penrice joined this bowling club when he was 17 years of age and 63 years on he is still playing – a remarkable achievement. He has always been a keen competitor in club and County competitions and indeed played for the County.
Geoff has been a loyal and hard working member – usually quietly behind the scenes.
He was club President for two years in 1971 and 72.
The committee thought it would be right and proper to present Geoff with a bowl and plaque in recognition of his long service.
